Koraput works well with children of any age if you pick the easy stops for the little ones and plan around the steps and the long hill drives. The town temple, the Tribal Museum and Upper Kolab need almost no walking; Gupteswar and the base of Duduma do.
- Upper Kolab
- 18 km (about 30 min)
- Gupteswar climb
- About 200 steps
- Duduma to the falls
- About 900 steps
- Winter nights
- Down to 3 °C
Easy stops, and the ones with steps
| Place | Walking |
|---|---|
| Sabara SrikhetraKoraput town | Easy; some steps up to the temple |
| Tribal MuseumKoraput town | Easy, indoors; allow about 2 hours |
| Upper Kolab18 km (about 30 min) | Easy; a terraced garden and a viewpoint |
| Deomali53 km (about 1 h 45 min) | The road is tarred to the top; it is windy and cold on top |
| Gupteswar76 km (about 2 h) | About 200 steps up to the cave, through forest |
| Duduma68 km (about 1 h 40 min) | About 900 steps down to the falls, and a hard climb back; small children can watch from the viewpoints at the top |
By age
- Toddlers: keep to the town sights, Upper Kolab and the viewpoints; skip the long staircases, and plan a short day with a rest after lunch.
- School-age children: Deomali suits them, since you can drive to the top, and the Gupteswar steps are a manageable climb taken slowly.
- Teenagers: sunrise on Deomali, the Duduma steps, and the hill walks at Talamali and Kalyamali.
Long drives, breaks and car sickness
- How far: Deomali is 53 km (about 1 h 45 min), Duduma 68 km (about 1 h 40 min) and Gupteswar 76 km (about 2 h) from Koraput town, one way.
- Breaks: on ghat roads we stop every 60 to 90 minutes, and we drive long hill roads in daylight.
- Car sickness: children who get car-sick sit in the front rows or by a window.
- Seats: children count as passengers. Seventeen is the legal limit, and no child can travel on a lap to go over it.
What to pack
- Warm clothes from November to February: nights drop to 3 °C, and Deomali is windy.
- Light cotton in summer; even in May, Koraput stays below 35 °C.
- Shoes with a good grip for the steps and wet rocks near waterfalls.
- Water and snacks for every drive; food stops on the waterfall roads are few and simple.
- Any medicines your children take, and something for car sickness.
An easy day with children
Sabara Srikhetra in the morning, the Tribal Museum next door, lunch in town, and Upper Kolab in the late afternoon for the garden and the light on the water: hardly any walking, and back at the hotel by evening. Our 1-day plan builds on the same stops.
Near the water
Hold small children's hands near waterfalls: the rocks are slippery, and at Duduma the dam upstream can release water without warning. Stay out of the water at both Duduma and Rani Duduma, especially after rain.
