The falls
The Kanger's tributary streams drop over the edge of the valley and down a series of rock ledges into pools, so Tirathgarh looks like a staircase of white water through the trees. Bastar district gives its height as 300 feet; other sources give lower figures, because the falls come down in steps.
When to go
Bastar district names October to April as the best time, along with the rainy season, when the falls are fullest. In the dry months the flow is gentler and the pools are easier to enjoy from the rocks.
Kanger Valley National Park
Tirathgarh is inside Kanger Valley National Park, declared in 1982 and about 34 km from Jagdalpur. The park also holds limestone caves: Kotamsar (Kutumsar), Kailash and Dandak. Bastar district puts the falls 35 km south-west of Jagdalpur.
Getting there from Koraput
Tirathgarh is 136 km (about 3 h 20 min) from Koraput town by Google Maps. Chitrakote is 67 km (about 1 h 45 min) from Tirathgarh, so the two make one long day from Koraput, or two easier days with a night in Jagdalpur.
Safety
The rocks around the pools are slippery, wet or dry. Wear shoes with a good grip, keep children close, and stay out of the water when the stream is high after rain.
